Macerata
was allegedly founded after the destruction
- in 408 - of the nearby Helvia
Ricina, a thriving small town that had existed since the 3rd
century B.C. Today Macerata, a town with very profound and ancient origins,
seems to be lying on a hill dominating the River Potenza valley on the one
side, and the River Chienti valley on the other.
