| Differently
from almost all the other towns in the hinterlands of the Marches (built
on hills or slopes), Chiaravalle arose, around 1500, on a plain sided by
the last section of the Esino before its flowing into the sea. The Abbey
of St Maria in Castagnola (called also of Chiaravalle) was chosen to be its centre.
