one has yet succeeded in discovering who was the first to choose this
elevation as homeland and a refuge. According to a trustworthy hypothesis,
the populations escaping from the valley inhabited the area and erected
the first fortifications on the site of the Roman town Pitulum
(destroyed by barbarian hordes).
