Matelica was given over to the Ottoni family in the15th. and 16th. Century during which time it prospered in the wool trade. With the return of direct rule from the Church a period of decadence ensued. Matelica is the hometown of Enrico Mattei, father of the Italian petrochemical industry, the writer, Libero Bigiaretti and the artist Raffaele Fidanza
