Description

A wonderful castle of the Middle Age located on several levels for an area of 1250 square metres. Every kind of reinforcement has been made over, while the inside rooms are still in a semi-raw condition, characterized by rooms with arched and decorated or timber ceilings, an inner yard, a chapel and a circle of walls. In the 13th Century the Castle was in the hands of the powerful Guelf Siccardi family. However, documents of 2171 and 1227 bear witness to the surrender of Castle di Naro to the municipal rulers of Cagli, though the Siccardi family retained other fortifications. In the 14th Century, control of the Castle passed to the Ghibelline family of Mastini. In 1312 the fortification numbered 44 fumanti, equivalent to 198 people. By the second half of the 16th Century the castle belonged to the Berardi family and remained in their hands until the line became extinct in 1798. The mighty, unyielding exterior vaguely resembles the hull of a ship. The road, whose original path is still visible, led to the only entrance in the circular wall. Through the pointed Gothic arched gateway you reach the castle’s interior. The entrance to the building itself is marked by a Gothic doorway at the top of a ramp. Paintings can be seen in several of the vaulted rooms on the first floor, among which is The Calling of Saint Andrew, a 17th Century copy of the painting by Federico Barocci.
