Trekking in Ancona

What are our towns and cities hiding amidst the chaos, noise and traffic? How can you get back in touch with your soul, your essence, your deepest feelings, whilst forgetting the usual problems that assail us as time hurries on?

Paradise Possible would like to accompany you on a calming promenade to discover and visit the cultural and artistic roots of the most beautiful cities in Le Marche, on a leisurely walk which will allow you to grasp the evanescent essence of the places and the noble spirit of their inhabitants. Have a great trip!

Not to be missed

The one and a half million tourists that arrive each year at the port of Ancona usually only pass through the city. Most of them are unaware that the city and its surviving classical architecture conceals a rich history, lying just metres from the seashore.

The ideal starting point to begin your discovery of this history is at the city museum, which traces the development of the city from its beginnings up until the 1960s through an interesting exhibition of photos, maps and video guides. In order to get to the museum, you’ll need to go to Piazza del Plebiscito, but if you ask for directions, remember to say Piazza del Papa, the Ancona locals’ name for this square which truly is the salon of the city.

Walk down Via Pizzecolli to see the ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre, an imposing construction from the Augustan period which could once hold up to 8000 spectators. You can still make out the original layout by looking at the open-air steps and the adjoining buildings which survive.

From here, you can go up the hill to the Cattedrale di San Ciriaco and then walk back down towards the sea, where the church of Santa Maria della Piazza seems to be stood listening to the sounds of the sea and the noises of the port. This amazing example of Romanesque architecture dates back to the 11th century and still bears traces of the ruins of the old early Christian temple upon over which it was built. The church was originally named Santa Maria del Canneto (lit. grove of reeds), because it laid in a marshy area, and then later Santa Maria del Mercato (market), because this same area, and in particular Via della Loggia were the setting for the frantic commercial exchanges which took place in the city.
