The Suitcase of Dreams

Organic

Natural Herbs on the South Circuit

They come in the most varied forms, periodically peeping out from the emerald leaves in the beautiful, blossoming and radiant meadows, in the shade of the oak trees or hidden amongst the small beech trees. We are left with only a few depositories of ancient and popular knowledge, capable of recognising wild, edible and tasty herbs to be cooked and enjoyed according to tradition.

Not to be missed

Piceno is a land full of surprises, hidden in the most unusual places. Try, for example, to gaze across the meadows and hillsides and distinguish between the green, fleshy seedlings that sprout up through the blades of grass. You would certainly never think that any of these were tasty or edible and you certainly can’t just experiment on a whim. It requires precise knowledge and an expert guide. We recommend you to try these wild herbs prepared by a local chef, perhaps after a day of discovery in region’s small villages.

The villages of Francavilla d’Ete, Montefiore dell’Aso, Smerillo and Petritoli have combined the use of natural herbs with the local traditions, matching them with other peculiarities in their own territories. To discover the riches of the small villages we suggest an itinerary that passes through this area and sets out from Francavilla d’Ete, which will bid you farewell from the ancient castle’s door, reworked and transformed to such an extent that today it appears similar to a seventeenth century triumphal arch.

Walking along the Tenna River and moving up towards the steep hills, you will reach the small village of Smerillo. Nature dominates the landscape and is beautifully tarnished by the work of mankind, which takes its form in small stone and brick houses, and arcades in which colourful vases of flowers show themselves off.

With a little courage you can go on to visit one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Montefiore dell’Aso. The vast skyline stretches from the Sibillini Mountains to the sea, the historic centre is well preserved and the ancient Collegiata of St. Lucia dominates the heart of the village.  The new Polo Museale di San Franceso winds its way through the austere ambience and is home to, amongst others, the Carlo Crivelli Room where the triptych that the artist made at the beginning of 1470s is exhibited.
