Paradise Possible's Itineraries

The suitcase of dreams

Francesco di Giorgio Martini

Le Marche’s fortifications: elegant, functional, and unforgettable.

According to the artist Martini, the city is just like a human body, with the ‘Rocca’ (fortress) as the head- the part dedicated to ensuring the community’s security. Elegance and functionality are his two signature traits, easily spotted in Le Marche’s numerous fortifications

What not to be missed in Northern le Marche

San Leo fortress is a bulwark found in the North of Le Marche, mentioned in Dante’s Purgatorio, Canto IV. In Montefeltro, you’ll also find the fort of Sant’Agata Feltria, constructed from the   Francesco di Giorgio Martini  in 1474, as well as the evocative fortress of  Sassocorvaro. Its circular form was adopted by the architect, who wanted to make a prototype of this new design on the basis that round walls are supposedly better at resisting the onslaught of bombardment artillery. Here, Martini succeeded in uniting the robustness of military construction, with its strange ‘a tartaruga’ (tortoise) formation, and all the typical elements of a noble house, with its grand courtyard overlooked by a suspended lodge.

At Urbino you’ll find the most famous work of Francesco di Giorgio Martini: The Palazzo Ducale. One of the large repertoire of works attributed to Martini is the wooden inlays of the Studiolo di Federico da Montefeltro: an optical illusion using perspective that has inspired page upon page of speculation as to who was behind the creation, and how to interpret its symbols.

In the nearby Urbania, Francesco di Giorgio built  the Palazzo Ducale. Having been reduced in size, the palace enjoyed its moment of highest splendor under Francesco Maria II della Rovere (ca. 1600-1630).

The fortress of Fossombrone  constitutes one of the strongholds of the duchy of Urbino’s system of fortifications.

Along the valley of Cesano you’ll find the fortress of Mondavio. Along with its towers and great tower it had the function of planning escape routes from lethal bombardments, instead of just relying on heavy-duty walls as they had done until then. This ingenious lookout system remained nevertheless unused, given that the fortress never suffered a bombardment. From 2000 the fortress holds a permanent exhibition of accurate reproductions of military arms used in the 15th and 16th centuries, constructed from the original designs of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
