How to Start Planning ‘Possible Happiness’ at Relais Villa Fornari

At least two visits are necessary prior the day of the wedding in order to ensure a smooth operation.

· The first visit for the engaged couple will be for three days (two nights) to check out the offer. On their arrival at the airport, a car will accompany them from Ancona Airport to the hotel. Upon arrival, the guests will be met with a welcome cocktail and will be checked into the Relais Suite. From 8pm dinner will be served in the restaurant and they will be able to try dishes from our tasting menu. The following day they will be taken on a guided tour of the city of Camerino and the churches mentioned above. Check-out will be on the third day and a car will take them to the airport for their return journey home.

· The second visit, again consisting three days (two nights), is necessary to work out the details of the wedding ceremony, in this case it will be conversations with church officials about the church, the signing of a contract and a confirmation agreement with the hotel.

The necessary time to organise everything is estimated at about a year. For example, if the date were 1 September 2013, the first visit would during September 2012, and the second would be a few months after (November or December 2012) for the confirmation.

The Ceremony at Relais Villa Fornari

The guests will stay for five days and four nights. They will be welcomed at Ancona Airport by a bus company called Contram Camerino Spa. They will be taken to Relais Villa Fornari for check-in and met with a welcome cocktail in the garden or the bar. Dinner that evening will be served in our restaurant. The following day, with the bus at their disposal, there will be a guided visit to the city of Camerino and lunch in the city centre.

Guests will be free in afternoon to roam around the city. The bus will return to Relais late afternoon and leave again for an evening meal in a nearby farmhouse.

The third day is the day of ceremony. A free morning in the villa with a hairdressing service for the ladies, followed by brunch, the departure by bus in the afternoon for the church and then the return to the villa for the wedding reception.

The fourth day consists of a free morning, an afternoon walk in the Sibilini Mountains and dinner at a pizzeria.

On the fifth day guests will check-out and depart by bus for Ancona Airport.

The Cost ‘Marrying in Italy’ at Relais Villa Fornari

The cost of the weekend will be € 350.00, including airport transfers to and from the villa, a two-night stay in the Suite with breakfast for two people and two evening tasting meals for two people (drinks are included).

The hiring of the bus for five days will be € 2500.00 which includes all arrangements mentioned.

The price per person for the group of guests is € 400.00 including four nights’ stay in the hotel. An evening meal, brunch and the wedding reception at Relais’ restaurant are included, as well as three meals in restaurants that have an agreement with the hotel.

Drinks for these three meals are not included in the price (it includes drinks for the wedding reception only).

Villa Fornari is a remarkable example of 18^th century architecture. Home to Camerino’s noble families, including the Fornari family, the villa has recently been acquired by the Bottacchiari family who have transformed the property with great sensitivity and precision. Whilst recovering the ancient splendour, the villa has also maintained the elegance and the refinement of the noble residences.

The restaurant is refined, well lit and airy. The dishes prepared by the chef are small masterpieces and triumphs of flavours, served with attention and professionalism.

The Miracle of Cantinone

One of the most famous miracles that everyone knows is the tale of the Wedding at Cana, when Jesus transformed water into wine. It may seem blasphemous to say so, but with my natural (and perhaps overzealous) tendency to look for connections between things, it was that very sensation that popped into my head when I first set foot in the Cantinone B&B and Holiday Apartments, owned by Jane and Ian. Allow me to explain: this impressive country home which now hosts tourists from every corner of Europe once had a very different purpose. During the Second World War, all the wine produced in the region of Cupramontana would be gathered there. It was a simple wine, what we would call a ‘table wine’, and one in which the local citizens took great pride. This pursuit, which will by now have made clear to you the origins of its name, made the Cantinone a sort of magical place, a casket that contained the people’s effort and their spirit of initiative during that era gave them little time to think about anything else other than survival. Cupramontana, just to be clear, is the birthplace of our extraordinary Verdicchio grape.

With the end of the war and the passing of time, new and now famous wine cellars have arisen around this monument to the daily life of the people of Le Marche, and the Cantinone has ceased to perform its historic duty. Gradually it fell into ruin and became picturesque rubble, riddled with mystery. Generations passed and the significance of what this old country house had meant to the local history was lost.

Some years later, when Jane and Ian bought the ruins with the help of Grazia, they were confronted with the challenge of renovating an enormous building, covered with creeping plants and in many areas reduced to rubble. It was a sort of lost paradise that within a couple of years would be transformed before their eyes into a potential paradise. Little by little work progressed, the couple discovered new parts of a house that, had previously been hidden by heaps of rubble, walls in tatters and dust. One of the most remarkable discoveries – finally I’m able to explain to you the nature of the miracle – was the natural spring that was hidden away within the deepest tunnel of this vast cellar. In the deepest recesses of its structure, the building that greedily took care of the wine from a whole valley, now revealed its greatest mystery: water. Water that is linked to a deep well, which on the surface is almost entirely hidden by brambles. When Jane told me of the emotion she felt the day she first discovered this phenomenon, stressing that a way must be found to make it accessible to the visitors of the B&B (jbecause to do so will require going through Ian’s workshop), it dawned on me that not even years of neglect could have spoilt the charm of the place, and that the wine locked away in those spacious rooms had transformed itself into water. A sort of miracle in reverse, it would appear.

When Jane and Ian decided to move permanently to Le Marche, they never imagined they would transform the Cantinone into a B&B: they understood however, having stayed in many neighbouring B&Bs whilst working, that it could be a way of bringing new life to the building and sharing its beauty with others. Today the Cantinone is a farmhouse basked in light; the large apartment and living room windows give light to the furniture that is both inviting and comfortable. At the centre of large garden, where finally the beautiful well appears in all its glory, is an attractive swimming pool from where a panorama of the valley can be appreciated. All the apartments are self-catering, giving families the possibility of a holiday that wont break the bank. And if Jane says that the project, “like every project, is unfinished”, it seems that this would be perfectly fitting with the history of a place that has not yet finished its story or ceased to reveal, little by little, its wonderful secrets.

An interview with Marina Pieroncini of San Settimio

The charm of a place can be measured in many ways, one of which I like to call “la prova della pioggia” - 'the rain test'. If you think about it, many great cities such as Paris, Rome and New York, are as beautiful in the rain as they are the sun - perhaps even more so. In Rome, you can find yourself caught in a downpour and soaked to the skin, but such is the beauty that radiates all around that you can’t help but feel happy, liberated. The same thing happened to us at Riserva Privata San Settimio.

As we arrive to interview Marina Pieroncini, manager of the estate, it’s raining heavily, yet the charm of those 400 hectares of Mediterranean remain intact, as if all the trees were taking a deep breath in unison. In fact that’s exactly it, 'oxygen' the first word that comes to mind when I look around and contemplate our imminent meeting with Marina. It doesn’t surprise me that while, on the door of "Il Padiglione" (the country club restaurant), I'm wondering whether to knock or just go straight in, and then I catch a smiling face through the glass "Come in, it’s open!" she says, raising her voice a little in jest.

Upon entering, we immediately realize that the atmosphere is that of last minute preparations (only 4 days to the reopening). While we wait for her to deal with various phone calls in her little loft style office, our attention is drawn to a lady perched on the corner of a table in the restaurant, talking on the phone: "Two lovely large fillets, mmm, nice and big; large, smoked scamorza, four pieces; Grana Padano cheese, a quarter should do for now, no, okay, if it costs less then another quarter; ham; bresaola; three pieces of Fabriano salami with lard; two loins; then taleggio cheese: just one, one taleggio; then a pre rolled puff pastry, the one for desserts, yes? Three pieces of mascarpone cheese, the half kilos ones, ehm, three; and then a box of chocolate drops and a box of chocolate flakes, again just one. Okay”. It’s the cook, Simonetta, Marina tells us reaching up and putting an end to our dangerous 'culinary hypnosis'. Then she leads the way between the fireplace and the billiards table, settling down at one of the dining tables from where we can see across the valley to the surf on the sea at Senigallia.

How nice to eavesdrop while the cook’s ordering the ingredients with such precision and grace.

They’re all like that here, the beauty of this place is in its staff, all of whom have been here for ten years, apart from me, I’ve been here for four years. Take Stefania from the dining room, I call her KGB because in her efforts to ensure the best possible service to the guests, she questions them on virtually everything but their blood group: in the guest book the majority of the dedications are towards her, the clients absolutely adore her. They’re all like that though, like Maurizio with his off roading activities or Simonetta who is in the kitchen and so unfortunately is always a bit hidden. They’re a great group of employees, the cornerstones of our success. There’s also a new Sicilian girl due to arrive to help out for the season. I already know that I’m not going to be able to stop myself help from teasing her just a little, just thinking of her I start to speak with a Palermo accent... hopefully she won’t take any offense.

It would seem that she’s very luck to spend the season here surrounded by such wonderful people.

I think so, yes. You see, to do this job you have to love it, you need to have passion. If there were no problems that would be even better, but here the place is unique: you have the freedom to manage the work as you think best and have the opportunity to do so in a really fantastic place.

Some would say that, being so affable, you're not the typical ‘Anconetana’.

Fortunately I'm half Abruzzese (she laughs). My mum is from Ortona where I spent the best summers of my adolescence. You know, I arrived in the town as the 'foreigner' and so I was the centre of attention.

Tell us about your clients. What are the interests and activities most requested by the guests of San Settimio?

It depends on the type of package they choose, some include a visit to the wine cellars, others are wellness packages. Possibly the most popular activites are offroading with the jeep, also the quad and horse riding. It also depends on the spirit with which they arrive, they may want to relax for example or there are those who come and go walking in the reserve every day.

You have a wide range of activities on offer. Tell us about the hotel’s strengths.

Our strengths? Well, everything. A major strength could be the fact that we always employ team-building activities such as the jeep, quad, Tibetan rope bridge walking, horseback riding and trekking ... we get requests from companies wanting to do outdoor activities and we’re always at their disposal, there’s no need to contact external companies to organize outdoor activities at the reserve. As for the spa, well it’s obviously an advantage but then again now most places have a spa. Here the secret lies in the total immersion in nature, then when you see that in the midst of all this greenery there is also a wonderful spa, well then you need look no further.

Do you have plans for expansion at San Settimio in the next few years?

There are plans to renovate a little house we have on the reserve (la ‘Casa del Campo’ - 'The Field House'), when we can find the funding. The renovation costs aren’t exactly small. At the moment, however, there really is everything here. I do like the idea of a covered swimming pool behind the spa, which would allow customers to spend a whole day of well-being, rather than the current two hours.

In terms of reservations, which is your busiest period? How long is the average stay?

We mainly have guests coming for weekends. Obviously we’re busiest in high season and during bank holiday weekends, but even in high season, the weekends are always the busiest. I’d say the average stay is usually therefore two or three days, but it would be nice if more people came mid-week, from Monday to Thursday. In fact, we have designed a package specifically for such periods. Also because at those times, you can often find that you have the estate virtually to yourself, the spa is all yours, what more could you want?

People like yourself are rare.

So let's see if we can make something come out of the collaboration with tour operators and our new international partners. We must keep in touch with everyone, be everywhere, because if you only have relationships with those who your existing contacts, you’re at risk of missing what’s going on around you. That’s just my way of thinking, I’m not an economist. I know it's a utopia, but to create something that brings everyone together regardless of size, location or reputation would be really cool.

If it is true that behind every great man is a great woman, it is equally true that behind every welcoming, well-kept and efficiently run B&B is a great woman. Great women carry beauty with them, they can do anything they truly want. You may ask yourselves why I’m offering such a premise and it’s simply because there’s no other introduction I can give to Patrizia Balducci, owner of the Gocce di Camarzano B&B in Moscano, Fabriano. Not only is she the charming owner of the B&B but is also well known locally as a ‘naif’ painter.

I had the good fortune to meet Patrizia at the opening of “Oltre la neve”, ("Beyond the snow"), her first exhibition which opened 15^th January at the Palazzo dei Convegni in Jesi and which runs until the 30th of this month. It's incredibly amazing how individuals can sometimes overwhelm you with their humanity. I’m not sure how Patrizia would feel if she knew that it was her personality that struck me even more than her works. Don’t get me wrong, her works are beautiful, honest and clear, I wouldn’t expect anything less, yet Patrizia’s character is far stronger than her art. Her bright yet timid eyes, the way in which her right hand, emotionally gripped the index and middle fingers of her left hand during her improvised opening speech (the 'moment of my fear" as she described it), the way in which her feet are in constant motion, swinging: she reminded me of a child, proud of a beautiful picture they’d done, but in hiding behind their mother’s skirt, modest and in fear of compliments.

It was such natural genuineness that moved me, and it’s this authenticity that can be felt at Gocce di Camarzano. It’s a curious act of destiny that in 1600 the house was owned by an aristocrat, the Marquis of Camarzano, and that years later, a woman should buy it with the sole intention of transforming it into a farm (50 hectares). If you had seen her works, you would understand where the vivid and brilliant Patrizia draws her inspiration. It can be seen around the farmhouse, in the changing seasons, the sunflowers (as can be seen on one of her pictures which hangs on the wall in the beautiful home of Maggie Brew, a friend of Patrizia, whose story is told in Country Homes Blog), in the wheat, sorghum and the patchwork of beautiful fruit trees. Every now and then the farm animals interrupt the perfect silence that reigns over the sloping terrain on which Gocce di Camarzano is built.

Patrizia is not an ordinary woman; in addition to the six brightly coloured bedrooms, each with their own beautiful fireplace, the house also offers a delightful library and cosy reading room which is located in the part of the house which in winter is host to exhibitions (the barn being used in summer). In short, the house combines the perfect balance of sobriety and artistic inspiration.

A talent that Patrizia expresses everywhere: from the embroidered tablecloths to the elegantly written menus. All that remains, takes on a perfect coherence, from the air one breathes at Gocce di Camarzano to the feelings that artist evokes with her works: according to curator Simona Cardinali, even her works that present more turbulent images actually want to transfer a sense of peace, in which the privacy of the individual, is drawn to, completely captivated, losing themselves and gaining a sense of calm. Even the most minute pictorial elements which recur on her paintings reflect Patrizia’s 'symphony of hospitality' perfectly: open arms and hands, outstretched to the world around, represented by the lush nature or the individual. Everything in her, in her paintings, in her house, communicates and is generous of itself. All that remains is to wish future visitors to Patrizia’s B& B, as Balducci said, nervously biting his lips, having been dismissed by the guests of his exhibition: “Buone sensazioni a tutti!” - "Good feeling to all."

“The lesser-known Marche (pronounced mahr-key) region is in the calf of Italy's long, tapering boot, next to the 'Chiantishire' of Tuscany and Umbria.

Here towns are on a human scale where life is slow and gentle and where the shining star is Urbino - the model of courtly life.

Those in the know come to The Marches in search of authentic Italy, set in a rural idyll of snow-capped peaks, rolling hills and meadows cloaked with olive groves and vineyards, charming old villages and plenty of splendid walking and hiking country.

With an Adriatic coastline of 180 kilometres there are beaches for everyone - from the big, lively seaside centres such as Pesaro, the region's provincial capital, to the smaller resorts, such as pretty Sirolo on the Conero peninsula.

'On the slopes of the Apennines, almost in the centre towards the Adriatic, is situated the little city of Urbino.. This jewel of a renaissance city remains little changed from the days when Duke Federico of Montefeltro set up his celebrated court here in the late 15^th century.

Urbino's rose-coloured buildings are bathed in golden light high up among the mountains as if in a time warp.

Just to the south is the courtly little town Cagli, framed by the twin peaks of Monte Acuto and Monte Catria, some of the highest peaks in the northern Le Marche area - an unspoiled wilderness with views to sigh for. Cagli's fame dates back over two thousand years when it was an important staging post on the Via Flaminia, one of Ancient Rome's most travelled roads.

The story of the tearoom in a old cantinone begins a long time ago…

When Jan & Jane left New Zeland to find their dream home, they arrived to the Vecchio Cantinone of Cupramontana, they were happy and did understand that they just arrived on the right place where dreams be fulfilled and they now live there. Marche Country Homes

Since then, after two years of projecting and restructuring the old cantinone, Jan & Jane did realize their project of a Bed & Breakfast with tea house to start a touristic welcome activity in the Marche region, the region they chose for reinvent their live. Where to Stay

The old cellar, with the surrounding great area on a rich territory of fruit trees and blackberry and raspberry, abandoned thirty years ago ,is now Il Vecchio Cantinone, an elegant patronal house in stone with swimming-pool, which came back to life on the sweet hills of Cupramontana, village, where on the beginning ‘900 began the cultivation of vineyard for the production of the bitter white wine , the Verdicchio of Castelli di Jesi, which did permit to notice the Marche region all over the world.

When Jane did become more familiar about the territory in which she lives, she changed idea about the tea house…. in her marchisan paradise and then decided that she would hold alive the historical vocation of the old cantinone and in the underground locals she would realize a stock of vintage wines where promote the local enological delicious, from the Verdicchio (white wine) to the Rosso Conero (red wine of the Conero Area) Rosso Lacrima (red wine of the Morro d’Alba Area), from the Falerio (white wine of the Southern Le Marche Area) to the Rosso Piceno (red wine of the Piceno Area), from the vino di visciola to the golden passiti.
