The Suitcase of Dreams

Breath of Life itineraries

Not to be missed:

In Roman times, Tifernum Metaurense, known today as Sant’Angelo in Vado, arose from the point where the Morsina torrent merges into the River Metauro. The city, rich and vivacious, was set amongst important commercial routes and a flow of workers during the era. The same workers that were probably a part of the construction of The Domus of the Myth: a large noble dwelling place, erected towards the end of the 1st century AD, and embellished by a complex of figurative mosaics featuring subjects that vary from ‘the triumph of Neptune’ to Medusa beset with serpents; an achievement so valuable that it suggests the presence of a cultured and refined contractor. The city of Tifernum was destroyed during a long war between the Byzantines and the Ostrogoths (6th century), but the nucleus of the medieval layout is still visible today, with the civic tower, the Palace of Law, the portals from the Renaissance period and the stately palaces.

About ten kilometres further along the valley, another forge of works of art crops up on the banks of the Metauro: Urbania. The river laps against the mighty walls of the Ducal Palace, almost paying homage to beautiful artefacts collected in the rooms of the civic museums. Urbania is still today a centre of vitality, heir to a glorious past that, in 500, saw it famous throughout the whole of Europe for its ceramics and was known by the name Castledurante.

Piobbico, farther to the south, enjoys a mild climate because of the woodlands that surround it, even during the hotter months of the year. The richness of this small medieval village is plentiful, so much so that in the 16th century naturalist doctor Costanzo Felici preferred not to reveal it, but to instead entice travellers to take a break in the countryside in order to discover it for themselves. He wrote: ‘One catches sight of other things of equal marvel within and outside of Nerone, and if I were to show them as I wished, one by one, the reader would tire of reading them and my pen of writing them; so that judging it to be better to leave it for the object of desire of curious people, rather than making it a tedious spectacle for the mind, I have nothing more to add on the subject of this most marvellous, celebrated mountain… ‘

If you would like to feel ‘outside of time’, devote a few hours to a walk nearby the castle, following the route of the River Vitoschio. The silver thread of the river cuts through the denseness of an incredibly flourishing valley: ten kilometres of landscape free from human intervention, a rare view to come across in one of, if not the most celebrated protected area.
