Ancona rediscovered

Explored in this way, Ancona takes on a particular and unexpected flavour, and even for its inhabitants, it becomes a different place, to be discovered simply by walking through the historic centre.

Not to be missed

The Ancona of the cinema is very different to the Ancona seen through the eyes of its citizens or visitors. Indeed, precious scenes from Luchino Visconti’s film Ossessione (Obsession) make it possible to discover unexpected images of the city, of the bay and the port as they were in 1943, before bombings destroyed a large part of the historic centre.

From the panoramic viewpoint of the balcony - opposite the important Duomo di San Ciriaco - from which Massimo Girotti surveys Ancona, you go down Via Pio 2nd   until you reach the Roman amphitheatre and descend the little steps which lead you to the Museo Archeologico delle Marche. Passing by the Pinacoteca Podesti, which houses several masterpieces (Lotto, Tiziano, Crivelli, Pomarancio), you reach Piazza del Papa - Ancona’s living room - whose tea rooms and restaurants set the tone for this spacious and airy piazza.

From the Teatro delle Muse, which always has a very interesting theatrical programme to offer, you turn towards Ancona’s other coast. Yes, that’s right: even though you’re leaving the sea and the port behind you, you’ll find just as much sea if you continue straight on until you reach the Passetto. Ancona is one of the few cities in which you can see the sun both rise and set over the water! Go along Corso Garibali, with its sparkling window displays and you will reach the wide, tree-lined Viale della Vittoria. Go past the Stadio Dorico, and you will come to the Passetto, scenic viewing point par excellence. Nanni Moretti can be seen running in front of this backdrop in ‘La stanza del figlio’ (The Son’s Room), the 2001 film which took the Palme d’Or at the 54th Cannes Film Festival.

The walk is easy and covers a distance of about 4 kilometres. Several stages of the journey can also be accomplished using public transport (for example, along Viale della Vittoria). The route provides a new, different way to explore the city, not only for those holidaying in Ancona, or passing through for a few hours, but also for its own citizens.
