Ancona,
In the first case, you can start with a stroll through the
old-city centre, overlooking the port, from which rises the Lazzaretto Mole built by
Vanvitelli (one of its "guests" was Giacomo Casanova), and dominated by the
Cathedral of San Ciriaco. Within the space of just a few hundred metres, visitors cam admire churches, buildings and monuments dating back to Roman times, the middle-ages and the Renaissance period, including an amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD.
Other attractions include
the City Art Gallery and the National Archaeological Museum of Le Marche (containing
artefacts ranging as far back as the 10th century BC) as well as works by Vanvitelli,
Titian, Crivelli and Lotto, to name just some. If you still have time left, and you are staying around for a while, remember
that only a few kilometres from Ancona is the Basilica of Loreto, one of the great
treasures of Christianity, at the centre of which stands the Holy House of Nazareth, and
the house of Giacomo Leopardi, the eternal poet of Recanati. - Culture - Tourism - Sports - The famous "brodetto Copyright 1999 Liberation Ventures Ltd. |
